….The dynamic and fast-changing nature of our world today is
\nbest described by VUCA, a term coined by the US Army War
\nCollege. VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity
\nand Ambiguity….<\/p>\n
The first of these megatrends is digitisation.
\nIt is worthwhile to step back and look at the recent history of
\nhuman invention. The first telegraph machine was invented in
\n1838. Forty years later Alexander Graham Bell invented the
\ntelephone. It took over another forty years for us to invent the
\ntelevision and yet another forty to invent the silicon integrated
\ncircuit chip in the 1960s.<\/p>\n
At the same time, there is another megatrend happening. The
\nworld order is changing as economic power shifts from West to
\nEast. According to a 2012 McKinsey study, it took Britain more
\nthan 100 years to double its economic output per person during
\nits industrial revolution and the US later took more than 50
\nyears to do the same. More than a century later, China and India
\nhave doubled their GDP per capita in 12 and 16 years
\nrespectively. Significantly, China and India accomplished this
\nwhile having about 100 times the population base as the US and
\nBritain did during their industrial revolutions. The report goes
\non to state that \u201cthe two leading emerging economies are
\nexperiencing roughly ten times the economic acceleration of
\nthe Industrial Revolution, on 100 times the scale \u2013 resulting in
\nan economic force that is over 1,000 times as big.\u201d And we are
\njust at the beginning of this massive transformation.<\/p>\n

However, winning in a VUCA world is not just about the
\nhardware. It is also about having new software \u2013 a new kind of
\nleadership that is values-led and purpose-driven and leaders
\nwho can redefine the role of business in society.
\nTo be values-led is more than simply putting your values down
\non a piece of paper. It is about living and breathing those values
\nevery day.<\/p>\n
