But of course, entrepreneurs\u00a0<em>never<\/em>\u00a0know how things will turn out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">I\u2019ve often said that if I\u2019d known how difficult it would be to start a company, write a book, OR run a podcast at the outset \u2013 well, I might have chosen a different path!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">In reflecting back on <a href=\"https:\/\/paulgibbons.net\/oldsite\/itunes\/\">my first year as a podcaster (2018)<\/a> I wanted to share with you the three most valuable lessons I&#8217;ve learned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">Let&#8217;s take a look<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Three Lessons I\u2019ve Learned From My Year in Podcasting<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>1) Everything is harder \u201con the inside.\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">GREAT athletes make what they do look effortless \u2013 so it is with the great podcasters:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joerogan.com\/\">Rogan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/samharris.org\/podcast\/\">Harris<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tim.blog\/podcast\/\">Ferriss<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">A <em>sixty-minute podcast takes me approximately a day<\/em> to produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">This is partly because <strong>if<\/strong> <strong>I\u2019m interviewing an author, I always read their book<\/strong>.\u00a0 Partly, I put a lot of thought into the <a href=\"https:\/\/paulgibbons.net\/oldsite\/podcast\/climate-change-paris-accord-james-shaw\/\">show notes<\/a> which are extensive (see below).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1102\" src=\"https:\/\/paulgibbons.net\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/snow-notes-snip-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"694\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paulgibbons.net\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/snow-notes-snip-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/paulgibbons.net\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/snow-notes-snip-1024x661.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/paulgibbons.net\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/snow-notes-snip-233x150.jpg 233w, https:\/\/paulgibbons.net\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/snow-notes-snip.jpg 1375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 694px) 100vw, 694px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>2)\u00a0<\/strong><strong>In our noisy world, quality is the \u201cante\u201d, the rest is promotion, promotion, promotion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">When I started writing and podcasting, <em>I had this fantasy<\/em> that if I only produced excellent work, I\u2019d quickly, virally, and effortlessly rise to the top of the heap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">LoL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\"><strong>Despite acclaim such as\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cyour book on change is the best in 20 years\u201d, and \u201cyour podcast is up there with Sam Harris\u2019\u201d, I\u2019ve got thousands of listeners, while Harris gets hundreds of thousands!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">The big learning, for writers, podcasters, and entrepreneurs\u00a0alike <strong><em>is that there are no easy results.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">We&#8217;d love to lose weight by reading a book &#8211; it takes a year of intense effort to lose 10% of your body weight.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The question or conundrum is:<\/strong> <em>how do you promote to win fans and followers, without becoming annoyingly salesy?<\/em>\u00a0 <em>Without clickbait headlines?\u00a0 <\/em><em>Without sacrificing quality?<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>3)\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u201cOvernight success\u201d takes about 15 years.<\/strong>\u00a0(I didn\u2019t\u2019 coin this one.)<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">When I look at great non-fiction authors today, say Thomas Friedman, it is humbling how well they write, and how well their books do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\"><strong>The<\/strong> <strong>most important thing for me to remember<\/strong> is that building a new career (writing and podcasting in my case) ALWAYS takes time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">I used to trade on Wall Street (well on London\u2019s version of Wall Street &#8211; the &#8220;City&#8221;), and in that business feedback is instantaneous \u2013 you either made money that day or lost it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\"><em>The rest of the world ain\u2019t like that!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14.0pt;\">The Journey of a thousand miles starts with a step (maybe Confucious).
