Some of Ann&#8217;s prodigies had difficulty adjusting and achieving later in life.\u00a0 Others suffered from mental illness.\u00a0 \u00a0What was the role of parenting and the education system in creating these mixed results?<\/p>\n<p>These aren&#8217;t academic questions for me.\u00a0 During this episode (and in a personal epilogue), I refer obliquely to my own history, as a math and language prodigy, who had the potential to finish college by 17 but whose life was overtaken by alcoholism and depression resulting in a 15-year hiatus between college and adulthood.\u00a0 (I&#8217;m not sure the latter has fully arrived.)\u00a0 \u00a0The very real question, for me certainly and perhaps for these kids, is what constitutes &#8220;enough&#8221; achievement &#8211; when is potential\u00a0(as much as it may ever be) fulfilled?<\/p>\n<h3>What You\u2019ll Learn from this Episode:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>What gifted children appear to have in common.<\/li>\n<li>The effect of over-pressuring a young achiever.<\/li>\n<li>The link between mental illness and childhood giftedness.<\/li>\n<li>The role of schools, and the difficulties with early college entry.<\/li>\n<li>The good and bad news from today&#8217;s parenting norms.<\/li>\n<li>How gifted education has changed over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m raffling off books every week for people who leave the podcast a <a href=\"https:\/\/paulgibbons.net\/oldsite\/itunes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review on iTunes<\/a>.
